We are changing our ISP from Steadfast to Ubiquity for our New York monitoring location. Hence as a result, the IP address for the New York monitoring server will change. This change will happen from Feb 1st 2012, after which the old IP address for New York server will not be valid.

Today morning (January 20, 2012), we faced an unexpected downtime starting 08:15AM PST to 14:25Pm PST due to a power failure in Equinix, our California data center. Polling did not happen during this time and even our website page was not accessible during this time period. The issue is resolved now and our monitoring services are back to normal.

Even though what happened was not in our control, we understand the difficulties it would have put you into. Please accept our sincerest apologies. We hope to provide higher resilience for our infrastructure in the future.

The following is a brief of what actually happened.

Equinix is the co-location provider in California for all Zoho services including Site24x7. The power failure affected our services. All these services including Site24x7 have multiple database clusters and each cluster has a Master-Slave-Secondary Slave combination. The power failure caused inconsistencies in some of the clusters and this delayed restoring the services.

We are still in the process of restoring the redundancies. Will keep you posted.

Update: Our website monitoring service is restored completely. If you face any difficulties, please contact support@site24x7.com or send us a tweet to @site24x7.
Yesterday, some of you might have noticed some strange behavior with Site24x7 service. First of all, let me apologize for the inconvenience caused. I will do my best to explain to you what happened and why it happened and how we are going to deal with this kind of problem in future.

The Incident

Yesterday around 12.30 pm PST, we had close to 3 outages at our IDC, the longest downtime being for 5 minutes. Our engineering team was able to get the server up and running within 20 minutes of receiving the downtime alert. But this doesn’t mean that the monitoring didn’t stop, there was some erratic behavior such as abrupt logging out of your account (if you have logged in during that period) and receiving downtime alerts even when website was up.

Once the problem was rectified, our monitoring system went on to work without any issues.

The Problem

After meticulous troubleshooting, we found the root cause to be failure of one of the router serving our link at our ISP (Internap) end. Unexpectedly our redundant link was also homed on the same router. Our ISP is analyzing the failure of the redundant link.

The Result

This affected our monitoring as we were unable to connect to the target monitored server. As a result of this, false alerts were generated from our system.

How to Delete the Downtime from your Report

You can delete these downtimes from your report by following the below steps:
  • Log in to your Site24x7 account
  • Go to the respective monitor dashboard page
  • It will list all the recent down time for the monitor under Downtimes table
  • Click on the X icon present in the right end of each downtime.
This will delete the downtime for the monitor.

The Learning

In addition to the existing checks for avoiding false alerts, we will also add additional network connectivity check to avoid this sort of scenario in future.

We will also refund the SMS credits to users who were affected due to yesterday's downtime.

If you have any further questions or clarifications, do contact us at support@site24x7.com.
Please make a note of our change in our IP address of our Spanish monitoring server.

Update: Unfortunately, our upgrade process didn't go as smoothly as planned. Hence the old IP address of Netherlands is still valid. If you have white listed the new IP addresses, we recommend you to revert to ensure smooth and continuous monitoring from Netherlands server. We will keep you informed regarding the IP change.

We are in the process of upgrading our Netherlands (Rotterdam) monitoring server. As a result, you might face some disturbance in terms of monitoring capability from this location. We also like to inform you that we will be obtaining new IP addresses as a result of this upgrade.

Old New IP Address New IP Address
  • 213.163.84.159
  • 213.163.84.160
  • 213.163.84.161
  • 213.163.84.162
  • 213.152.168.159
  • 213.152.168.160
  • 213.152.168.161
  • 213.152.168.162

Note: This new IP address will be in effect from 10th October 2011.

We request all Site24x7 users, who use Netherlands monitoring server as one of their primary or secondary monitoring location, to exclude the old IP address and white list the new IP address in their firewall rules. This would enable smooth monitoring of your websites and servers from this location.

If you have any questions, do contact us via support@site24x7.com.
We have added two more locations to our global monitoring network. One server is from Sydney, Australia and the other is from Auckland, New Zealand. Below are their IP address for your reference.

Site24x7 also enables you to monitor the upload and download response time of your FTP server. It uploads/downloads a test file into your server and monitors its response time (time taken by the test file to upload/download). It also works for secure FTP servers (SFTP).

Site24x7 automatically alerts you when,

a) FTP server is unavailable
b) Username/password for the secure FTP server is incorrect
c) Response time crosses specific threshold values
d) File upload and download time crosses your specified threshold.
