Monitoring Site Downtime with Site24×7

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Author: Arun

We recently came across a very nice article about Site24×7 in the blogosphere. This article was written by Anand and is titled “Monitoring Site Downtime”. Below are a few excerpts from the article:

If something goes wrong with my site, I like to know of it. My top three problems are:

- The site is down

- A page is missing

- Javascript isn’t working

I’ll talk about how I manage these over 3 articles.

My site used to go down a lot. Initially that was because I kept playing around with mod_rewrite and other Apache modules without quite understanding them. I’d make a change and upload it without testing. (I’m like that.) And then I’d go to sleep.

Next morning, the site’s down, and has been down all night.

Anand says his website initially had a lot of downtime, but he was not aware of it as he was not monitoring his site at that time. Then he started using using Site24×7 to monitor his website, and he was being alerted every time was there was a problem.

So I started using Site24×7 to track if my website was down. It’s a convenient (and free) service. It pings my site every hour. If it’s down, I get an SMS. If it’s back up, I get an SMS. It also keeps a history of how often the site is down.

Over a period of time, the downtime came down and he also changed his hosting provider to get better service.

So I switched to HostGator a few months ago. Nowadays, the site is down a lot less. (In times of trouble, it becomes sluggish, but doesn’t actually go down.)

Anand also says Site24×7’s alerts are really useful.

But what really made Site24×7 useful to me is that it would alert me when there was a big problem.

Site24×7 sends me an SMS when my site is down. Fits the bill perfectly.

You can read the entire article here. Thanks for writing about us, Anand!

I also want to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy New Year 2008 and also to remind you about our ongoing special discount offer.

Happy New Year 2008

We recently came across a nice little article about Site24×7 in the blogosphere. This one is by Ajay Prabhu and is basically a short review of Site24×7’s web site monitoring service. This article mentions almost all of Site24×7’s basic features. Of course, we frequently come up with newer features and enhancements such as the ones in our recent update.

Here are a few excerpts from his article:

What Company is Offering:
Site24×7 checks for the response time and availability of your website. For example, you can add a URL, say http://mycommerce.com, for monitoring. You can set a threshold for a web page such that - if the page load time of that page is more than 3 seconds, you should be notified through EMail, SMS and RSS. This helps you in taking quick action before it affects end users.

Author: Arun

Killerstartups has included Site24×7 among its list of killer Web 2.0 sites. They also have included a short review of Site24×7 in their site. The review is titled “Site24×7 - Complete Website Maintenance”.

Here are a few excerpts:

These days businesses are judged by how professional their website looks and how well it works. That being the case, companies who do not have a professional site manager are constantly running the risk of website failure. Site24×7.com offers a service for these companies that is affordable and reliable. Site24×7 is a simple hosted web site monitoring service that works around the clock making sure that websites are performing flawlessly.

There is a “why it might be a killer” section which explains the value Site24×7 can provide to a website owner.

A business’ website is the face of the business and must run seamlessly. Site24×7 can ensure that sites run to their highest potential and when something goes wrong it does not remain a mystery. It used to be that if a client was unhappy with a service they had to do research and call around to other companies. Now, all it takes is a few clicks to drop one service and find another one. Therefore, websites must run perfectly and Site24×7 can make that a reality.

The review also includes our contact information as well as Alexa traffic rank and other competitors in this space under the ‘Killer Data’ section.
