Author: Arun In earlier posts of the 'Reports Overview' series, we discussed availability reports and response time reports. Today, in the last part of this series, we will discuss comparison reports along with the other options available within the 'Reports' tab. Comparison Reports The Reports tab provides an option to compare the performance of your websites over a period of time. All you need to do is login to your Site24x7 account, navigate to the 'Reports' tab, select from the sites listed under 'All Websites Availability Report' and click Compare. This reports provides a comparison chart of the response times of your sites as well as their hourly average in milliseconds. If you are managing multiple websites, this report is very useful way to compare their performances and know which one performed better over a period of time. Reports over a custom time period Site24x7 stores your website monitoring data from the day you add it for monitoring. All the reports, including availability and response time reports, can be viewed over a period of time. There are a multitude of time ranges available by default. You can choose any of these or specify the exact 'From and To' dates. Reports through email Site24x7 reports section also gives you the option of sending reports through email. You can choose to send reports for any website or web application you are monitoring. I believe this series of articles have given you an overview of the Reports section and were helpful to clear some of your doubts. If you have any questions, please contact support@site24x7.com How can we enhance the reports section and make it more comprehensive? What else would you like to see in the Reports section? Pour in your suggestions.

Author: Arun In part one of the Report overview series, we reviewed the 'Availability reports' section. Today, we will discuss about Response time reports within the reports tab. As you know, response times are good indicators of how your website is performing. Here are some of the response time reports available: The 'All websites availability report' gives you the response times of the various websites and web applications configured in your account, apart from showing availability of these sites. Response time reports can be viewed for each website individually. From the historical data section, you can find out the Response time details for your site at different times as well as segmented by hour of the day. Response time report segmented by hour of the day Based on these reports, you can get an idea about the performance of your websites and web applications over different periods of time. Before I sign off, here is a look at one question about response time that is frequently asked: How do you define "response time"? Do you download the entire page and count the time until everything has loaded? Or just the time until the server responds? Response time is the time taken to get the full html output from the server. However, it does not include getting the images and other resources that are loaded within the html page.
Author: Arun Michael Slater, Site24x7 user and co-founder of digital photography software company Fotiva, wrote to us recently regarding an article he had written in his blog. It is titled 'Using External Web Site Monitoring Services' and it talks about the need for using external monitoring services to check if your website is working fine. Here are a few excerpts from his article:
When your site goes down, you want to know about it as soon as possible. Ideally, you'd detect that something was going badly before a failure occurred, using monit or similar software running on your server. (See my article on Installing monit for Server Peace of Mind for details.) But some failures just aren't detectable in advance. Furthermore, if the failure brings down your server entirely, or is in the connectivity to the server, no software running on your server will be able to notify you.
Fortunately, there's a simple and inexpensive solution: third-party monitoring services that periodically retrieve a page from your server and send you an alert if it fails. There are many such services, most of which have a limited free option and a variety of paid plans.
Michael says Site24x7 is his current favorite service and has also written a small review of Site24x7.
My current favorite is site24x7. It has a rich set of features and flexible, reasonable pricing. The free plan will test two URLs every 60 minutes. With the paid plans, you can test as frequently as every 5 minutes (for $4/month per URL). The faster you poll, the more it costs, so you can decide for each site how critical it is to know right away, and how much youre willing to pay to find out quickly. You can also get status reports via RSS
Assuming you're running a dynamic site, its not enough to know that the server responded to the page request; you want to ensure that the database and the application server are running. The simple way to do this is to have the service look for certain keywords on the retrieved page. As long as these keywords come from the database, this test gives you pretty good assurance that your application is running and is able to talk to the database. site24x7 offers this ability even on the free plan. On the paid plan, you can also test a web application using a series of URLs to step through a sequence of operations. It will even provide login credentials to the application if needed
He also gives a partial list of other similar services available such as Hyperspin, SiteUptime, etc. Thanks for mentioning us in the post, Michael! This article will be especially helpful for any business or website owner who is looking forward to use an external website monitoring service to track his websites. Read full article

An overview of Reports section (part 1)

Author: Arun A new feature enhancement that went into our recent GA release is the 'Reports' section. Here is an overview of the Reports section, presented as a three-part series. For the uninformed, I am talking about the new tab that can be seen when you login to your Site24x7 account. The Reports section gives the following types of reports
  • Availability Reports.
  • Response Time reports by the hour.
  • Comparison Reports.
  • Reports over a custom range.
This post focuses on Availability Reports. The 'All websites availability report' section gives you availability reports for all the websites and web applications configured in your account. The main benefit of this report is that you get to see the downtime stats of all your websites at a glance. For example, in the above sample image, we can see that the website labeled 'mydomain' had some downtime while three other websites did not experience any downtime during the last 24 hours. Availability reports can also be viewed for each website individually. From the historical data section, you can find out the exact start and end time of your website's unavailability as well as the duration of the downtime. This section provides you with empirical knowledge of your website downtime and you know exactly how many times your sites went down over a given time period. I believe this post provided an overview of Availability Reports section and also helped to clear up some of your doubts. If you have any questions, please mail to support@site24x7.com and I'll answer those when I write the second part of the 'Report Overview' series. Btw, just to remind you, our introductory 40% discount offer is valid until this weekend only!!

Author: Arun When we released our GA version a couple of weeks ago, we also introduced 2 types of user accounts - Free and Professional. Now one frequently asked question after our GA release is "How do I upgrade my account to Professional account?" Well, the upgrade process is really very simple. All you need to do is specify the number of website / web application monitors, monitoring intervals, and the payment period. The payment will be processed through your credit card. Here is how you can upgrade to Professional account in 4 simple steps: 1. Login to your Site24x7 account and click the 'Upgrade' link on the right corner of your screen. 2. The upgrade screen will be displayed. Here you can specify the number of websites & web application monitors you want to buy along with their monitoring intervals. You can also choose your payment period. From this screen, you will know exactly how much discounts you will get and how much you will end up paying. 3. Click 'Buy' after specifying your options. Now a pop-up screen will be displayed where you have to enter your credit card details. 4. After entering credit card details, click 'Buy' to confirm your payment. Thats it. Once you complete these steps, you would have successfully upgraded to Site24x7 Professional Account. Happy upgrading!
